GPI develops its modular solutions with the need to easily manage format changeover processes in mind, aiming to simplify operators’ work, drastically reduce manual intervention times, and minimize the possibility of errors that could jeopardize the proper functioning of the system.
GPI systems operate autonomously and are designed to manage all different work phases, minimizing the need for manual intervention. The format changeover is the only operation that requires concrete action from the operator, who must replace certain components with others suitable for the new dimensions to be processed. This process demands particular attention from the operator, since the failure to replace even a single part can cause damage to the entire system, leading to a stoppage or, in the most severe cases, resulting in damage to the mechanical componentry.
To make this operation simpler and safer, we have therefore equipped our machines with a system for identifying individual parts using QR codes, which are recognized via RFID technology (Radio Frequency Identification).
When a specific recipe is selected for processing a particular format and all necessary components are manually replaced, the machine verifies that all parts installed in the system are the correct ones for processing the requested format. If the codes match and the mounted components are therefore those actually specified, a green light illuminates, signaling to the operator that the format changeover operations have been completed successfully; conversely, if there is a mismatch, the machine cannot be started, thereby preventing any risk.
This technology simplifies format changeover activities and provides immediate verification of the correctness of the processes implemented, drastically reducing the risk of errors and shortening the time required for this specific operation.
GPI automated solutions are developed specifically to measure for the management of certain products and formats, based on the requirements expressed by customers during the design phase. However, experience teaches us that over time, the needs of companies can change, making it necessary to introduce types of packaging and formats not anticipated during the project phase. When this occurs, a structural intervention on the machine is required, involving a complete reassessment of the system’s entire layout and an evaluation of the best methods to make the processing of the new formats possible.
GPI technicians are always available to customers providing remote or on-site assistance to assess the optimal type of intervention and to determine how many and which modifications must be implemented, also in relation to the size difference between the new formats and those previously processed.
Modifications of this kind can be successfully implemented, but they require significant engineering effort and are not possible in every circumstance. For this reason, during the design phase of our systems, we always suggest that customers inform us immediately of any developments to their packaging that they are currently working on, even if they are not yet in production. In this way, by knowing in advance that processing certain products and formats will be necessary in the future, we have the opportunity to develop the system from the outset taking these needs into account, ensuring that even future formats can be managed optimally.
